The basics

How sea freight pricing works

Chargeable weight and the 6000 divisor

Freight is priced on the higher of dead weight and volumetric weight. Volumetric weight is L x W x H in cm divided by 6000. A carton of 60 x 50 x 40 cm works out at 20 kg volumetric, so if it weighs 12 kg you are charged on 20 kg, and if it weighs 25 kg you are charged on 25 kg.

DDP versus DDU

DDP includes customs clearance, duty and import GST, so the goods arrive with nothing to pay. DDU is cheaper up front, but duty and GST are invoiced to you when the shipment lands. DDP suits most brands that want one landed price.

Typical transit times

Allow about 25 to 30 days port to door for the east coast and Queensland, and about 25 to 35 days for SA and WA. Chinese holidays, vessel rollovers, port congestion and customs inspections are the usual causes of delay.

FAQ

Freight questions, answered

How is chargeable weight calculated?

We work out two weights for your shipment. Dead weight is what the cartons weigh on a scale. Volumetric weight is length x width x height in centimetres divided by 6000, for each carton, times the quantity. You are charged on whichever is higher, with a minimum of 11 kg.

What is included in a delivered duty paid rate?

A DDP rate covers sea freight, Australian customs clearance, import duty and GST at the border, and delivery to your door. You receive the goods with nothing further to pay. With DDU, freight and delivery are covered but duties and taxes are billed to you separately on arrival.

How long does sea freight from China to Australia take?

Port to door usually takes about 25 to 30 days to NSW, ACT, VIC and Queensland, and about 25 to 35 days to South Australia and Western Australia. Vessel schedules, port congestion, customs inspections and public holidays in China can all add time.
